The Minister of Environment and Water, HE Rashid Ahmad Bin Fahad, has issued a
decree to temporarily halt the issuance of new fishing boat licenses.
The decision falls in line with the ministry's aim to
support marine conservation through regulating the exploitation of fish stock.
The decree halts the sale of any registered boats. In addition, owners cannot
give up their boats.
Any person seeking to register with the ministry must be Emirati and have the
correct authorisation to fish.
Under the decree, the person to whom the boat can be sold to must be over 18,
display good conduct, be registered as a sailor with the ministry and have
fishing experience.
